Quantitative Methods for Analyzing Second Language Lexical Tone Production

چکیده

The production of L2 lexical tone has proven difficult for learners tonal languages, leading to the testing different training techniques. To test validity these techniques, it is first necessary capture differences between L1 and datasets. current study explores three analyses designed compare tone: (1) using a single deviation score, (2) score calculations specific regions productions, (3) applying complexity-invariant distance measure two time series These were tested datasets sampled from previous effects visual feedback paradigm on Mandarin tone. Results suggest analyses, although useful providing an overall evaluation how speakers’ pretest versus posttest productions speakers, lose critical information about tone, namely pitch height, contour, timing production. third analysis, datasets, can provide pertinent lost in more robust manner.

FACTORS INFLUENCING SENSITIVITY TO LEXICAL TONE IN AN ARTIFICIAL LANGUAGE Implications for Second Language Learning

This study examined whether musical training, ethnicity, and experience with a natural tone language infl uenced sensitivity to tone while listening to an artifi cial tone language. The language was designed with three tones, modeled after level-tone African languages. Participants listened to a 15-min random concatenation of six 3-syllable words. Sensitivity to tone was assessed using minimal ...

Cross-language Lexical-tone Identification

We examine how native lexical-tone experience influences identification of novel tone. Cantonese, Thai, Mandarin, and Yoruba listeners identified CV syllables bearing the six phonemic Cantonese tones. Overall tone accuracy scores and tone-error patterns were assessed. Consistent with previous reports, native listeners’ perception reflected effects of ongoing tonal mergers and acoustic similarit...
